An Adventure Elopement and Family Ceremony at Ridgway State Park, Colorado

Photos by Vows and Peaks

Emma and Josh got married at Ridgway State Park in Colorado in June 2026, after spending the first half of the day off-roading to an alpine lake and a hidden waterfall in the San Juan Mountains. Their family was waiting at the park for the ceremony.

They wanted a wedding that felt like an adventure, and they wanted their family there. Their photographer, Vows and Peaks, built the day so they didn’t have to choose.

A private first look, then the San Juans

The day started with a private first look. From there they headed into the mountains in a Jeep, off-roaded up to an alpine lake, explored the basin and pulled over whenever a view was worth a stop. Nobody was rushing to the next location.

A hidden waterfall

After the lake they kept going through the basin to a waterfall tucked into the mountains, took their time, took photos and enjoyed being out there. Emma wore a gown by Avery Austin. Josh’s look pulled from Kind Design, Nordstrom and Peter Millar, and their jewelry came from Thorum and Cullen Jewellery.

Vows with family at Ridgway State Park

Back at Ridgway State Park, the private adventure turned into a family ceremony on an overlook deck, under a wooden A-frame arch dressed with purple flowers. Emma and Josh exchanged vows surrounded by the people closest to them before making it official. Want more San Juan inspiration? See this Jeep elopement near Ouray.

Get the look

Editor picks inspired by this wedding, not what the couple wore.

  • Afloral Fake Delphinium Wildflower in Deep Purple, $28 at Afloral. A 37.5-inch faux larkspur stem for dressing a wooden arch in purple, like the A-frame at Ridgway State Park. The stems are wired so they bend around wood, and they’re sold one at a time, so count on several for an arch.
  • Polaroid Go Generation 2 Instant Camera and Film Bundle. Check the price at Amazon. Emma and Josh pulled over whenever a view was worth a stop. Pack Polaroid’s smallest instant camera and you come home with a print from each one; the bundle includes film for 16 photos, and the self-timer handles shots of the two of you.

The idea worth stealing

Split the day. Spend the morning on a private adventure, then meet your family for the ceremony. You get the quiet of an elopement and the people you love for the part that counts, and your family doesn’t have to off-road to an alpine lake in their wedding clothes.
