Unique Wedding Entertainment Trends to Impress Family and Friends!

As a fairly grey English summer and the busiest time for getting married draws to a close, we look back on the newest entertainment trends which have made the rounds at weddings up and down the country, from folk-inspired live wedding bands to DIY dance-offs! So if you’re looking forward to your magical day come Christmas, spring, next summer or even years in advance, get inspired by these unique wedding entertainment ideas below!

Sleek Choreography

Whether it’s the popularity of TV shows like ‘So You Think You Can Dance’, choreography videos making the rounds on Facebook, or BeyoncĂ©’s classic ‘Single Ladies’ music video, acts with polished and effortless choreography have never been more popular. As weddings stray further and further from the traditional, young couples are looking to bump up the party atmosphere with something to thrill and surprise. Guests won’t be able to top these moves, but that won’t stop them from trying! (We’re looking at you, dads).

Flash Mob Wedding Dances

Speaking of dancing dads, there’s been an insurgence this year in flash mob surprises put on by families and friends for the happy couple. Jaws on the floor, the newly married couples watch as bridesmaids, groomsmen and other wedding guests put on a spectacular performance. It may not always be as, er, elegant as one put on by a professional act, but it’s certainly something to talk about for years to come!

DJs AND Musicians

One trend in booking wedding entertainment this year is hiring a group made up of both a DJ and musicians. For a mixture of sounds on the big day, the idea is to please all guests (achieving the impossible!) with a variety of styles and genres. Whether the in-laws want to schmooze over the sound of some smooth jazz or the younger siblings plan on tearing up the dance-floor to the latest pop and house, nobody is left in their chair by the end of the night.

Ambient Acoustics

Do you drift into a daydream of twanging guitar strings alongside a backdrop of bunting, flower crowns, and the evening glow of a setting sun? You’re not alone. As couples strip things back with the chilled-out charm of a boho wedding, they’re increasingly looking to folk-style bands to match this mellow atmosphere. This trend can be attributed to acclaim for bands like Mumford & Sons and The Lumineers, and the backlash from overproduced pop which has made acoustic covers blow up online.

50’s calling

Retro style is having a bit of a renaissance at the moment. While fashion makes nods to clothes which wouldn’t look amiss on the sets of Mad Men, music is taking its cues from 50’s throwbacks. A cover of The Andrew Sisters’ Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy went viral online, and cover-band Postmodern Jukebox is taking its energetic reworking of modern hits all over the world. Meanwhile, more and more couples are deciding to jazz up their big day with a vintage style band, kitted out with glamorous costumes and authentic instruments. For the perfect 50s fantasy, what could be better?

DIY Entertainment

They say if you want a job done properly you’ve got to do it yourself, and that’s advice which has been taken to heart by countless couples who have decided to put on their own performances this year! Inspired by popstar Melissa Molinaro’s tightly choreographed wedding performance for her husband, there’s a host of footage online from similar wedding stunts. Usually staged as a surprise, brides and grooms break out some immaculate moves while their spouses sit watching in disbelief. But the fun isn’t just for the newlyweds, with a fresh trend for bridesmaids and groomsmen to get competitive with their own dance-offs!
