When did you know they were the one? Was there something they did?, etc

Sophie – I think I knew there was something different about Calum on the morning after we met when he was driving me back to Forbes and kept looking at me and shaking his head, saying ‘I’m in trouble. Even that early on we both knew that we shared something special – right from the start there were no games, it was just easy.

But I think what cemented it was when I met his parents and sister for the first time, three weeks into our relationship, and again when Calum met my parents and school friends the following weekend, which is when he first told me he loved me. We both have similar family values and want the same thing out of life, which I think is very important.

Calum – morning after we met I knew Sophie was special. We met each other’s parents within a month. As I left her parents place her dad said I’ll see you at Christmas then and I’ve been hanging around ever since.

Tell me about the proposal:

We had always talked about getting married and knew we wanted to spend our lives together. But when Calum was made redundant in 2019, our plans of moving overseas together for a year went out the window, and we decided to get married.

We’d been together for four and a half years by this point. I already had a ring – I’d inherited my paternal great grandmother’s engagement ring, so together we organized to have the diamonds (which are 100 years old this year) reset into a ring which is sentimental and timeless.

Although I was involved in the process of having the ring reset, I didn’t know when Calum was going to propose. I told him I still wanted it to be a surprise. So one Saturday morning on January 11, 202, I’d just gotten home from a boxing class and Calum asked if I wanted to take the dog for a walk.

This was a pretty typical Saturday for us. We live walking our dog Bonnie together and that morning we walked to the park where we would throw the ball to her. At one point I thought Calum was bending down to pick up the ball to throw to Bonnie, but instead, he got down on one knee and pulled out a box, and asked me to marry him.

The proposal was perfect – it was just us and Bonnie, doing something we loved. I always said I didn’t want him to propose in front of other people, so he did well. It was a very happy day. We spent the rest of the day on the phone with our family and friends telling them the exciting news which was really nice.

Tell me one thing you love most about each other:

Sophie – I love Calum’s brain and his personality – he’s the smartest person I know, he has the best sense of humor, he always manages to make me smile even when I don’t feel like it, and he’s the sort of person you just want to be around.

Calum – Sophie is a very patient person, she is book smart, caring and will be the best mother down the track.
