7 Things Guests Should Never Wear to a Wedding

Weddings are special occasions that require guests to dress appropriately. While dressing up for a wedding can be a fun and exciting experience, it’s important to remember that there are certain things you should never wear to a wedding. From white dresses to flip-flops, there are many fashion faux pas that you’ll want to avoid.

White Dresses

White is the traditional color of the bride’s wedding gown. As such, wearing a white dress as a guest can be seen as an attempt to upstage the bride or draw attention to yourself. It’s best to avoid wearing white altogether, or any shade that may be mistaken for white, such as cream, ivory, or eggshell.

If you want to wear a light-colored dress, consider pastels like pale pink, lavender, or mint green. These colors are appropriate for a wedding and won’t compete with the bride’s dress.

Black

Black is often associated with mourning or funerals, and as such, it’s generally not considered appropriate for a wedding. While black dresses can be elegant and sophisticated, they can also be seen as too somber or depressing for such a joyous occasion.

That being said, there are exceptions to this rule. If the wedding has a formal or evening dress code, wearing a black gown is usually acceptable. Additionally, if the bride or groom specifically request that guests wear black, it’s okay to do so.

Anything Too Revealing

While it’s important to dress nicely for a wedding, it’s equally important to dress appropriately. That means avoiding anything too revealing or provocative, such as short hemlines, plunging necklines, or backless dresses.

Weddings are typically conservative affairs, and wearing revealing clothing can be seen as disrespectful or attention-seeking. Instead, opt for dresses or outfits that are modest and classy.

Athletic Wear

Athletic wear, including sneakers, shorts, and workout clothes, should never be worn to a wedding. These items are too casual and informal for such a formal occasion.

If you’re not sure what to wear, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and dress up a little more than you think is necessary. It’s better to be overdressed than underdressed, and you don’t want to be the only one at the wedding in gym clothes.

Flip-Flops

Flip-flops are another item of clothing that should be avoided at weddings. While they may be comfortable and easy to wear, they are too casual for such a formal event.

Instead, opt for dressier shoes like heels, flats, or dressy sandals. Not only will these shoes look better with your outfit, but they will also be more comfortable if you have to stand or dance for extended periods.

Bright Colors

While it’s okay to wear colors to a wedding, it’s important to choose them wisely. Avoid anything too bright or neon, as these colors can be distracting and draw too much attention to yourself.

Instead, opt for more muted or pastel shades that won’t overpower the bride or groom’s attire. If you’re not sure what colors are appropriate, consider the season and time of day. For example, darker colors may be more appropriate for evening weddings, while lighter colors are better for daytime events.

Anything Too Casual

Weddings are typically formal affairs, and as such, it’s important to dress accordingly. Anything too casual, such as jeans, t-shirts, or sweatpants, should be avoided.
