The stars of Bravo’s Toned Up give post-engagement fitness tips

When Katrina Hodgson, co-founder of fitness empire Tone It Up, got engaged last year, she jumped on the opportunity to help other brides with their foray into fitness by creating the Tone It Up Wedding Series. Now she and partner Karena Dawn are spreading their fitness techniques even further, starring in a new show called Toned Up for Bravo. Here Hodgson shares tips for becoming your best self for the big day—sans bridalbodyobsession, last-minute crash diets, or forgetting meals thanks to the stress that wedding planning can spawn.

Work out in the mornings. “So much comes up later in the day!” Hodgson says. “When you wake up, walk or run away from your house for 15 minutes and run right back. No cell phone or E-mails—just you and the pavement.” She adding an additional toning workout three times a week.

Prepare your meals on Sundays. “Make it a priority with your fiancé,” she says. “Nutrients and exercise affect your mood and hormones, and taking care of your health will make wedding planning a more enjoyable experience for both you and your hubby-to-be.”

Join a community. “There are more than 250,000 women and more than 4,000 brides in the Tone It Up community right now,” Hodgson says, noting that it’s free to join. “For brides, it’s nice to connect with someone who’s also getting married and going through the same thing.” For more, check out

Inspiration Shoot:
Modern Luxe

July 19, 2013

Mason jars, hay bails, burlap table runners—check out any wedding blog and you’ll quickly see that rustic outdoor weddings are de rigueur these days. But if you’re more into Blahniks than boots then you’ll love this glamorous inspiration shoot by Davia Montoya. The principle designer and owner of Davia Lee Events puts a modern spin on old Hollywood glamour in a lavish way.

Her inspiration for the luxe looks come from the idea that there are no rules when it comes to your wedding. “The shoot was designed for the bride on top of fashion and not afraid to take risks like wearing a colored gown,” she says. The gorgeous jewels, created by Margaret Rowe Couture, help take the look from classic to contemporary. “We are seeing a lot of vintage pieces that are being made modern, so it is great for the bride that doesn’t have access to family heirlooms but wants to accomplish that same look,” she says. Check out her stunning shoot, with photography by Lindsey Hahn.

Event :: More from New York City’s The NotWedding, part two

June 19, 2013

Last week, we showcased the best event photos from The NotWedding, and now we’re bringing you part two of our series. Take a closer look at the décor from the vendors that made the New York City’s version of The NotWedding shine.

Designers at the event switched up table numbers by mixing and matching the design of the text- they used letters, numerals, or even both to create a few different looks.

Good things come in small packages…or vases. Floral design companies showed off what they could do with a few different flowers and a little green vase.

Modern bud vases like these made tabletops pop with red and white peonies sprouted from the centerpiece of each table. Emerald colored plates made for an eye-catching combo.

Event :: The NotWedding takes New York, part one

June 13, 2013

What better way to figure out which vendors to use in your wedding than by witnessing their work in action? Modern Weddings goes behind-the-scenes at The NotWedding, an untraditional bridal event that goes beyond booths and flyers.

Credit: Jean Spencer Photography

From the ceremony to the I Do’s, bridal event founder Callie Murray has created a way for both brides and bridal professionals to get an idea of what a wedding day will be like thanks to The NotWedding. She created this untraditional bridal event as a way to gather top industry vendors—including florists, décor companies, planners, photographers, and more—together to create and celebrate a mock wedding, fake bride and groom included. And the guests attending the pretend nuptials? They are brides looking for the perfect vendor team to plan their own big day. “The NotWedding allows brides-to-be to get a feel for how wedding vendors would actually perform on their wedding day, and wedding vendors love being able to truly show off what they do and how they work,” Murray says.

Murray’s offbeat bridal event has taken place in a number of cities, including Atlanta, Charleston, San Diego, Nashville, and Cape Cod, but this was her first in New York City. The bash took place at Bath House Studios where inside the venue, “happy couple” Natasha and Jonathan said their vows as real brides looked on amidst the embellishments.

After the mock ceremony, guests moved into the reception area, where intricate design details filled every corner. They dined on bites provided by Soulfully Good while the band Mixtape: A Cover Band For Hipsters rocked out in the background.

Take a look at the gorgeously detailed event photos during part one of our two-part series.

Brides, Bubbles, and Bliss

April 25, 2013

Founder Cara Nava shares her inspiration behind the modern bridal event

After the excitement of the engagement dies down, many new brides find themselves confused on what to do next. That’s where Cara and Scott Nava want to help. Three years ago, the husband-and-wife duo (who also happen to be fantastic wedding photographers) founded Brides, Bubbles, and Bliss, a Chicago-based wedding fair for the modern bride.

“Our vision was to create and produce an event that caters to the couple who want to go beyond the traditional,” she says. Their beyond-traditional offerings include tastings by premier caterers, dazzling drinks, live entertainment, and a runway show where brides can see couture gowns and accessories up close. Although it’s been a big undertaking, Nava says they’ve enjoyed every moment.
“Hosting and producing BBB has been such a fulfilling experience on so many levels. We’ve learned so much information about the industry and wanted to share that information with our fans on a regular basis.” That regular basis will be in the form of BBB TV, where viewers will be able to tune in year-round for wedding inspiration via the BBB website. Blissful, indeed!
